ATA is a Native Hawaiian Organization (NHO) that consists of members with genealogical ties to areas where sections of the trail network are located. These ancestral ties instill a heightened awareness of the kuleana (responsibility) of preserving and protecting the trails and their surrounding cultural resources. The ATA Board consists of members who share a passion for the protection and perpetuation of traditional Hawaiian trails on the island of Hawai`i and their culturally appropriate use. We seek to ensure that the ALKA and its network of trails are well-connected to the community and that Hawaiian values and principles are in place and practiced.

As with many trails in the National Trail System, a private, non-profit association assists the NPS in providing community support for planning and managing the trail. The Ala Kahakai Trail Association (ATA) began as an interim organization in 2006 and became a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2008.

Although ATA was formed to support community co-management of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail (ALKA) and the broader trail network, it is important to note that ATA is independent of NPS with its own purposes, goals, and plans. Today ATA’s work involves protection and community stewardship of all ancient trail systems on Hawaiʻi Island and associated natural and cultural resources.

We strive to foster partnerships and collaboration with individuals and communities who care about the trails and to provide help and guidance for the work of managing and sustaining the trail network in perpetuity. We develop or manage grants to fund programs and projects towards these ends. In addition, we have acquired properties through both a private land donation and fee simple purchases using grant monies from State and County land preservation programs. These lands will become part of our portfolio of trail conservation and access activities.
